These six blocks will fit together to make a 3 x 3 x 3 cube -- The Nob Cube -- after the inventor Nob Yoshigahara (click here to read the Wikipedia excerpt). Five of the pieces are nonplanar and are made from five 1 x 1 x 1 cubes; the sixth is a 1 x 1 x 2 block. The cubes that make up the pieces measure 2 inches on each side and all are cut from old-growth walnut so the pieces have a heft and solid feel. This is a difficult puzzle -- there is only one solution (except for reflections and rotations). One picture shows an attempt that misses the mark by two cubes. Getting down to a miss by one cube is a good effort; getting the cube itself is a triumph! (I expect this puzzle is patented, so I'm in the process of getting permission to sell a few of my models of this wonderful block puzzle.)
